The Sugar Cube Gallery started out life in the summer of 2014 as a pop up gallery in the foyer space of the Bowdens Farm based design & digital marketing agency, Teapot Creative.
The first exhibition was essentially in-house as it was by Mia Devereux, a member of the Teapot Creative graphic design team. Since those early days our aim has been simple – to offer a place for local artists, sculptors, photographers to show their work in a friendly, eclectic environment.
The exhibitions change every two months and we charge no commission meaning that the artists pocket the proceeds from any sales. Every so often we hold private viewings and charity events in the Sugar Cube, such as coffee mornings for Marie Curie and Macmillan Cancer Support.
Seeing the room full of people enjoying home made cake and a cuppa in amongst the art works is a wonderful feeling for us. Art is for everyone and should be enjoyed as widely as possible in whatever context possible.
Bowdens Farm near Langport in South Somerset is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike with a mixture of shops, businesses, art galleries and the famous Brown & Forest Smokery and café and even an air rifle range. We find many of the visitors to the café wander round to the Sugar Cube and have a nose around.
Past exhibitions have covered quite a wide range of subjects, styles and techniques. Everything from landscape and wildlife photography and lino cut prints to oil paintings and textile works made from laser cut aluminum. We try to change styles with each exhibition and as time progresses this will hopefully continue.
The gallery is open Monday – Friday from 9am – 4pm. It’s not huge, in fact it’s tiny so don’t come expecting to spend long here! We usually have about a dozen or so items on display and all for sale. If you’re interested in the burgeoning local art scene here in our part of the South West then pop by as one thing the Sugar Cube always offers is art that’s well worth the visit!
